String Shopping Bag --
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
February 1992, Revised July 2001.
DESCRIPTION: This
pattern makes a large drawstring string-type shopping bag. It folds up
small, but stretches out into a large size suitable for carrying all your
shopping purchases (it’s particularly great for carrying home your yarn
purchase for your next knitting project!).
SIZE: Varies
somewhat, depending on the size of your yarn, but the bag (not counting
the drawstring) is approximately 15 inches deep and 32 inches in
circumference when unstretched. Stretched out, it can be about 18 inches
deep and 48 inches in circumference. It can fold down to about 6 by 4 by 3
inches.
SKILL REQUIRED:
Intermediate
– you must be able to knit circularly on double point needles.
MATERIALS:
- YARN: About
300 yards of one of the following --
- Option 1 – Very
tightly spun cotton, linen, or similar yarn that is about the
thickness of a twine or heavy twine (NOT "Knit-Cro-Sheen"):
the tighter the twist in the yarn, the more snag-proof the bag
will be. For example, my first bag was knitted of Euroflax’s
linen yarn.
- Option 2 – A bias
woven or knitted cotton (or similar fiber) "ribbon"
yarn. These look somewhat like shoelaces. They make particularly
nice-looking bags. NOTE: the shiny rayon ribbons could make a
lovely bag, but I’m not sure how sturdy and snag-resistant they
would be.
- Option 3 – Almost
any cotton and/or linen yarn (or even acrylic).
- NEEDLES: You need both of the following --
- Size 7 – both double point needles AND a 24-29
inch circular needle. If, however, you choose a yarn whose label
recommends a needle size LARGER than size 7 (example: 8 or 9),
then go ahead and use the larger size, if you like, but still use
the size 13 for the mesh body of the bag. NOTE – If you have
very long size 7 double point needles (9+ inches), then you don’t
need a circular size 7 needle.
- Size 13 – 24-29 inch circular needle.
- MISCELLANEOUS:
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- End of round stitch marker
GAUGE: Totally
unimportant. If your yarn of choice has a label that recommends a needle
size LARGER than size 7, then use the larger size instead, but still use the
size 13 for the mesh body of the bag.
