PATTERN KNITTING TIPS

August 2001

Applies to February 2001 pattern

KNITTING THE HEART AS INTARSIA GARTER STITCH

  •  I knew that it felt a little "odd" to me to do intarsia knitting color changes on garter stitch instead of stockinette stitch, but I didn't realize how difficult that it really was until knitters of this pattern said "Huh?"  So here's the bottom line--

    • Color changes on RIGHT SIDE ROWS -- wrap yarn around as you traditionally do for intarsia on a right side (knit) row

    • Color changes on WRONG SIDE ROWS -- because you are working garter stitch, that means that your working yarn is at the back side (right side of the square) of your work, but the wraps must ALWAYS occur on the wrong side of the square (front side of your work when you are working a wrong side row), so here's what you must do

      • bring the working yarn (the yarn you are going to drop) forward between the needle tips and to the front side of the work (wrong side of square), and then

      • wrap the new strand of yarn counterclockwise around the dropped yarn and bring it backward between the needle tips to the back (right side) of the work before knitting the next stitch

    • Does that help?

HEART FROM RIGHT SIDE (no yarn wraps visible)

HEART FROM WRONG SIDE (see how the wraps look?)  -- note that you see some stitch distortions here and there on the backside, those show where I wove the ends into the stitches
