"Rag Bag" Tote Bag
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
March
2001.
DESCRIPTION:
This is a large tote bag knitted of fabric strips. It
is worked in stockinette stitch with 2 padded I-cord shoulder straps. It
is large enough to hold a grocery bag or a plethora of miscellaneous
knitting paraphernalia and/or beach gear. It is machine washable and
dryable.
SIZE:
It’s
about 18 inches deep and 18 inches wide when unstretched, not counting the
straps. The size depends on the fabric you choose and is not precisely
predictable, since the fabric may shrink the first time you wash the bag.
SKILL REQUIRED: Intermediate.
MATERIALS:
- "YARN": 5-6 yards of 45-inch
bargain-basement cotton or cotton-poly blend broadcloth. Be sure the
fabric can be ripped easily, then rip 1/2-inch-wide strips along the
length of the fabric and knot ends with square knots with about 1-inch
tails – hanging ends will be a decorative touch to the bag. Mill
ends and misdyed fabrics can work wonderfully.
- NEEDLES: Size 17 circular needle (24-29
inches long) AND Size 15 double point needles. NOTE -- the size of the
needles isn’t too critical, something in the ballpark will still
make a fine bag!
- MISCELLANEOUS:
- Stitch marker for end of row marker
- Darning needle large enough to weave in "yarn" ends.
- 3 stitch holders
- Size K crochet hook (optional)
GAUGE: Almost
unimportant, but mine is about 10 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette
stitch.
