Lattice Bag Set
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
April 2002 -- This pattern was originally designed for Alpacas
Magazine for its Spring 2002 issue.
DESCRIPTION: This
is a set of bags with a lattice pattern of traveling stitches, which is a
variation of cable stitch and is also sometimes called twisted stitch. All
bags are edged with garter stitch borders. This same decorative lattice
pattern is used on a coin purse, a tiny shoulder bag, a larger shoulder
bag, and a backpack. These bags can be used as school bags, treasure bags,
or purses by children or adults. The coin purse and shoulder bags have top
flaps with two buttons and are knitted back and forth. The backpack has a
drawstring top that is closed using the shoulder straps and is knitted
circularly. The backpack is a size that can be used as a purse or as a
book bag. These are lovely items, but remember that the backpack probably
can’t handle a full load of books without stretching entirely out of
shape, although it can take a pretty heavy load if you line it with woven
fabric.
SIZE: The coin
purse is 3.5 by 3.25 inches. The smaller shoulder bag is 4.75 by 4.5
inches, while the larger shoulder bag is 7.5 by 7 inches. Each shoulder
bag has a shoulder strap about 36 inches long. The backpack is 11 by 18
inches with two straps that can be adjusted in length.
SKILL REQUIRED: Intermediate
or ambitious beginner. The backpack is the hardest of the four projects.
MATERIALS:
- YARN: Sport or DK weight yarn (I used
America’s Alpaca from the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North
America).
- Coin Pouch – about
30 yards.
- Small shoulder bag
– about 90 yards.
- Large shoulder bag
– about 190 yards.
- Backpack – about
900 yards.
- NEEDLES: Size 4 needles or size to
achieve gauge – one 24-inch circular needle can make all of the
projects, but straight needles will also work for all of the projects
except for the backpack, which requires a circular needle.
- MISCELLANEOUS
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
- End of round marker for the backpack
- Two buttons about 5/8-inch in diameter for each
bag except the backpack
- Small safety pins (optional – but they work
great for marking rows; just pin one on every 10th row)
- Cable needle (optional) – if you are at all
afraid that you can’t pick up a dropped st, then you’d better
cable needle
- Stitch holders (optional)
GAUGE: 22
stitches per 4 inches in reverse stockinette stitch.
