Lace Candle Sleeves

PATTERN DETAILS

RELEASE DATE:  June 2001 -- this pattern was originally designed for Alpaca Magazine’s Holiday 2001 issue (Fall 2001).

DESCRIPTION:  Included are three variations of circularly-knit lace sleeves sized for glass-encased seven-day candles. The three patterns are of three levels of difficulty: from beginner to advanced. Because of the fire danger, these lace sleeves are designed for and should be used only for GLASS-encased candles!

SIZE:  Fits seven-day candles (about 2.75 inches in diameter and 8.25 inches tall).

SKILL REQUIRED:  Beginner to advanced. You must be able to knit circularly on double point needles.

MATERIALS:

  • YARN:  Fingering weight yarn, about 50 yards for each candle sleeve. Fibers that work well, include cotton, linen, alpaca, and wool. The yarn should be a single color or of color variegations that are subtle, so that the lace patterning shows well. The yarn color should also contrast with the color of the candle, although I think that white or cream lace on a white candle is particularly elegant!
  • NEEDLES:  Double point needles in size 5 or size to achieve gauge.
  • CANDLE: A glass-encased seven-day candle, about 2.75 inches in diameter and 8.25 inches tall. Candles without labels are available, but where you live you may only be able to find candles with paper or plastic labels that include prayers and Christian holy figures (Jesus or saints). If you can only find candles with labels, you can remove them by cutting off the plastic sleeve or soaking the paper-labeled candle in warm (not hot) soapy water. And why not read the prayer first, too?
  • MISCELLANEOUS
    • Stitch marker and darning needle

GAUGE:  This is about the only time I don’t think you need to do a gauge swatch, because the circumference of the project is about the size your gauge swatch should be. So what I recommend is that you do about 20 rounds of the pattern and then try sliding it on the candle (without taking it off the needles) and see how it fits – it should be tight enough that the sleeve won’t droop and the holes in the lace show well, but not so tight that you have trouble getting it on the candle. If it’s too loose, try again using smaller needles. If you think it fits well at 20 rounds, try the sleeve on the candle again after about 40 rounds to confirm that you still like the fit.
