Lace
Bookmark
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
September 2003
DESCRIPTION:
This bookmark is a combination of garter stitch and a
simple lace pattern. It is knit of whatever yarn you like and can be made
in a range of lengths. Starching during the blocking process will make it
stiff enough to use. The cord and tassel are made of the same yarn. The
directions are both in written-out and charted forms.
SIZE:
Varies entirely with the yarn and needles you
choose. The bookmark shown in the photo is knitted of a fine cotton yarn
(fingering weight or finer) on US Size 0 (2 mm) needles and is about 7
inches (18 cm) long.
SKILL REQUIRED:
Advanced Beginner. You need to know how to
make a cast on, knit, purl, yarnover, and bind off. Directions for how to
do the additional specific decreases are included.
MATERIALS:
YARN:
Any yarn – but cotton or linen or other
unfuzzy yarns work especially well.
NEEDLES: Needle
size is not critical, start by choosing a needle size appropriate to the
yarn (see the yarn band for suggestions). You can also use needle sizes
larger than usual. Double point or short straight needles work best
because you’ll be turning your work a lot.
-
MISCELLANEOUS:
-
2 stitch markers
-
darning needle
-
crochet hook (size isn’t critical but
needs to be large enough to hold 4 strands of your yarn)
-
rustproof straight pins
-
heavy spray starch
-
ruler or tape measure
-
colorfast surface to block on
-
electric fan (optional)
-
electric mixer and beater (optional).
GAUGE:
Not important, but the looser the gauge, the limper your
bookmark will be and you’ll need a lot of starch to stiffen it.
Closer look at tassel.
Blocked bookmarks pinned out on a pillow.
