PATTERN DETAILS

RELEASE DATE:  September 2002.

DESCRIPTION:  This child’s striped pullover sweater is worked in an unusual way. The multi-angled garter stitch pattern is worked circularly from the square neckline outward, and all shaping angles are retained throughout the working of the sweater. The sweater has a slitted front neckline with a button loop and a small slit at the center of the bottom back edge. Because of the way the pattern is written, the sizing of the pattern changes easily: with just a change in gauge, all measurements will change while remaining in proper body proportions – meaning that using thick needles and yarn makes a larger sized sweater, while using finer needles and thinner yarn makes a smaller sized sweater. Also, because the pattern is worked in garter stitch, it is very stretchy and can fit for a long time as the child grows.

SIZE:  Child's small and large, corresponding to approximately sizes 2 and 7.  Chest size is 21(27) inches/53(69) cm. with finished size of 23(29) inches/58(74) cm.  The sweater in the photo is the large size.  The pattern can easily be sized up using thicker yarn and larger needles, or sized down using thinner yarn and smaller needles.

SKILL REQUIRED:  Advanced.

MATERIALS:

  • YARN:  Yarn in 2 or more colors of almost any fiber.  The sweater in the photo is worked in 5 colors in random stripes.  The more colors you choose, the more yards you may need to have available since you need to have enough of each color to complete at least 2 rounds (because colors should never be changed on purl rounds or in the middle of a round).  The sweater directions are written without specific color changes designated -- you may use as many colors as you like and make the stripes as wide or narrow as you wish.

    • Small:  About 650 yards/710 meters of DK weight yarn (such as Brown Sheep's "Cotton Fleece" which is a cotton and wool blend).

    • Large:  About 950 yards/1040 meters of heavy worsted weight yarn (I used Tierra Wools' "Apparel Fine Wool", a 100% wool in natural white and in colors which I dyed with unsweetened soft drink powder).

  • NEEDLES:  U.S. size 6(10)/4.25(6) mm. or size to achieve gauge -- both a set of double point needles and a circular needle about 24 inches/60 cm. long.

  • MISCELLANEOUS:

    • Darning needle to weave in ends.

    • End of Round marker

    • At least 8 safety pin-type stitch markers

    • String or yarn for stitch holders

    • Button to fit loop.

GAUGE:  Remember that if your gauge is a little off from the below, you’ll still have a properly proportioned sweater that will fit someone of a slightly different size. What you want to do is find the best gauge for the yarn you’ve chosen, being sure that you like the garter stitch fabric that you get with your chosen needle size – you want your sweater to be soft and comfortable, not droopy (too few stitches per inch) or stiff (too many stitches per inch). If you have more stitches per 4 inches than the gauge shown, your sweater will be slightly smaller. If you have fewer stitches per 4 inches than the gauge shown, then your sweater will be slightly larger.

  • Size Small: 22 stitches per 4 inches.

  • Size Large: 16 stitches per 4 inches.
