Basketweave Cabled Tea Cozy
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
September 2003 - this pattern was originally designed for Alpacas Magazine
(projected publication is late 2003 or early 2004).
DESCRIPTION: This cozy is made
of 2 custom-sized rectangular or square pieces which are then fastened
together to fit your teapot. The center of each piece is worked in an
overall cabled design that looks like diagonal basketweave, and the edges
are garter stitch. The side and top edges of each piece have a series of
eyelets that act as decorative eyelets or buttonholes to match buttons
sewed over the eyelets on the other piece of the cozy. The top edge can
either have buttons or a drawstring cord. The buttons can be buttoned
through the eyelets to fasten the edges together or left open for the
teapot’s spout and handle, regardless of whether the teapot has a top or
side handle.
SIZE:
The width of each piece can be varied in ½-inch (1.3 cm) increments and
height can be varied in ¾-inch (2 cm) increments. Each of the pieces of
the tall cozy shown in the picture is about 9 inches (23 cm) wide and
10.75 (27.3) inches tall. The shorter cozy pieces are about 9.5 inches (24
cm) wide and 6.75 (17 cm) inches tall.
SKILL REQUIRED:
Advanced intermediate to advanced. You need to be able to work cable
crossings and a few rather complex decreases and increases, all of which
are described.
MATERIALS:
-
YARN:
Sport or DK weight yarn of any fiber. I suggest a yarn that is not dry
clean only. I used DK weight Classic Alpaca by America’s Alpaca in
50-gram skeins. The amount needed for your cozy will depend on the size
of your teapot. The tall cozy with drawstring required about 370 yards
(342 m) (4 skeins), the shorter cozy required about 111 yards (102 m)
(just over 1 skein).
-
NEEDLES: U.S.
Size 4 (3.5 mm) or size to achieve gauge, and Size 3 (3.25 mm) or 1 size
smaller than the larger needles. Note, DK weight yarns are usually
knitted with larger than Size 4 (3.5 mm) needles, but I find alpaca has
better body when knitted on smaller-than-usual needles.
-
MISCELLANEOUS:
GAUGE:
Over the cable pattern, your gauge should be
approximately 48 stitches (8 cable crossings) per 4 inches and about 24 rows
(4 cable crossings) per 3 inches. NOTE – your gauge is not too critical, you
are looking for a gauge of approximately what is given here. You just want
to be sure that your cozy is a little larger around than your teapot is.
