Felted Tasseled Purse Variations
PATTERN DETAILS
RELEASE DATE:
April 2006.
DESCRIPTION:
This pointed-bottom felted (fulled) purse pattern is has several
variations. It can be large or small with a flap to fasten over the top
or with a drawstring top with no flap. The drawstring version has a
pointed lace panel edging that overlays the purse and mirrors the point on
the purse. Both purses have tassels hanging from the bottom and
over-the-shoulder length twisted cord straps. NOTE – since these
purses are knitted before shrinking, they are technically “fulled” and not
“felted” (felted fabrics are made directly from the raw fiber without
knitting, crocheting, or weaving first).
SIZE:
- BEFORE FULLING:
- Sport weight with flap – about 6 inches (15
cm) wide by 10.5 inches (27 cm) long, not including the flap.
- Worsted without flap – about 8.5 inches (22
cm) wide by 13 inches (33 cm) long.
- AFTER FULLING:
- Sport weight with flap – 5 inches (13 cm) wide
by 7 inches (18 cm) long, not including the flap.
- Worsted without flap – about 7.5 inches (19
cm) wide by 10 inches (25 cm) long, not including lace panel.
SKILL REQUIRED:
Advanced beginner/intermediate. You have to be able to knit circularly on
double-point needles and work decreases.
MATERIALS:
- YARN:
- Sport weight for smaller flap-topped purse –
This is a rather lightweight yarn designed to
normally be knitted at 6.5-7.5 sts per inch (2.5 cm) in stockinette
stitch on US size 3-5 (3.25-3.75 mm) needles.
- MAIN COLOR – FOR FELTED BODY
- About 110 yards (101 m) for the body of the flapped purse, less for
the unflapped purse. The yarn MUST be 100% animal fiber that is NOT
machine washable, otherwise it won’t shrink. The yarn used in the model
is a sport weight hand painted 100% wool.
- CONTRAST COLOR – FOR TRIMMING
- About 25 yards (23 m) of a similar weight yarn of any fiber. The yarn
used in the model is a sport weight 100% rayon yarn.
- Worsted weight for larger drawstring purse –
This is a thicker yarn designed to normally
be knitted at 4-5 sts per inch (2.5 cm) in stockinette stitch on US size
7-9 (4.5-5.5 mm) needles.
- MAIN COLOR – FOR FELTED BODY –
About 140 yards (119 m) for the drawstring purse, more
would be needed for the flapped purse. The yarn MUST be 100% animal
fiber that is NOT machine washable, otherwise it won’t shrink. The yarn
used in the model is Colorado wool spun at a small mill. The yarn is
dyed with Kool-Aid brand beverage mix.
- CONTRAST COLOR – FOR TRIMMING –
About 100 yards (91 m) for lace panel edging and tassel.
The yarn used for the model is Brown Sheep’s Cotton Fleece.
- NEEDLES:
- Sport weight purse:
- 1 set of 4 or 5 double point needles – US Size 7 (4.5
mm) or size to approximately achieve gauge.
- Worsted weight purse:
- 1 set of 4 of 5 double point needles or circular
needle 24-inch (61-cm) or SHORTER (shorter is better)– US size 10 (6 mm)
or size to approximately achieve gauge.
- 1 set US Size 7 (4.5 mm) for lace.
- MISCELLANEOUS:
- Stitch markers
- Darning needle to weave in ends
- Sharp needle with large enough eye for the trim yarn
- Tassel “form” – 6-inch (15-cm) circumference book for
the small purse’s tassel, 12-inch (30-cm) circumference for the large
purse’s tassel
- Sew-on snap (size 4) for flapped purse and sewing
thread and needle to match purse color
GAUGE: Not
critical since this doesn’t have to fit a specific size AND the size can be
adjusted during the fulling process. Gauges below are shown prefulling,
postfulling gauges usually cannot be measured because the stitches aren’t
visible.
- SPORT WEIGHT: Before Fulling – about 20
stitches per 4 inches (10 cm).
- WORSTED WEIGHT: After Fulling
– about 10.5 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm).
Bottom point of pouch before fulling
